Historical background
It is the letter the apostle John wrote in his later years to the churches of Asia Minor. In a situation where an early gnostic heresy denied the incarnation of Jesus, it teaches that right confession of faith and the practice of love are the marks of true faith. Read together with John's Gospel, its meaning grows deeper.
What to watch for
Read the whole letter centered on the two declarations, 'God is light' and 'God is love.'
Sort out the three tests that distinguish a true believer from a false one (doctrine, love, obedience).
Meditate on the confession that 'we love because he first loved us' (4:19).
