- 1새 노래로 여호와께 노래하라 온 땅이여 여호와께 노래할지어다O sing unto the LORD a new song: sing unto the LORD, all the earth.Sing to the LORD a new song! Sing to the LORD, all the earth.

- 10열방 중에서는 이르기를 여호와께서 통치하시니 세계가 굳게 서고 흔들리지 못할찌라 저가 만민을 공평히 판단하시리라 할지로다Say among the heathen that the LORD reigneth: the world also shall be established that it shall not be moved: he shall judge the people righteously.Say among the nations, “The LORD reigns.” The world is also established. It can’t be moved. He will judge the peoples with equity.

Background
Psalm 96 belongs to the enthronement psalms (psalms that praise the Lord's kingship). According to 1 Chronicles 16, part of this psalm was sung when David brought the ark of the covenant to Jerusalem. This background reflects the joy that God dwells at the center of Israel. In the ancient Near East, each nation claimed that its own god was the greatest, but this psalm proclaims that other gods are nothing but idols and that the Lord alone is the true God. In terms of literary structure, this psalm is built from three invitations to praise (verses 1-6, 7-9, 10-13), and its scope steadily widens — from Israel to the nations, and from the nations to all of creation.

Today's reflection
Psalm 96 begins with the invitation to "sing unto the Lord a new song." Here, a "new song" is not merely a new tune but a response to God's new act of salvation. Verses 1-6 are a command to proclaim God's salvation to all the earth, and verses 7-9 are an invitation for all nations and all peoples to give glory to God.
In verses 10-13, it is proclaimed that God is coming to judge the world in righteousness, and remarkably, even nature rejoices and shouts for joy. Theologically, this psalm makes clear that the God of Israel is not the god of a single nation but the Creator and Judge of the whole world. The declaration, "Say among the heathen that the Lord reigneth," was a challenge to the idol worship of the surrounding nations at that time.
Simply put, the psalmist is crying out that God's greatness is so vast it cannot be contained within Israel alone — the whole world needs to know this news. God's righteous rule is not something to fear but a reason for joy. Today, discover God's new grace in your own life, and respond to it with a "new song."
