Zephaniah 3

- 15여호와가 너의 형벌을 제하였고 너의 원수를 쫓아내었으며 이스라엘 왕 여호와가 너의 중에 있으니 네가 다시는 화를 당할까 두려워하지 아니할 것이라The LORD hath taken away thy judgments, he hath cast out thine enemy: the king of Israel, even the LORD, is in the midst of thee: thou shalt not see evil any more.The LORD has taken away your judgments. He has thrown out your enemy. The King of Israel, the LORD, is among you. You will not be afraid of evil any more.
- 16그 날에 사람이 예루살렘에게 이르기를 두려워하지 말라 시온아 네 손을 늘어뜨리지 말라In that day it shall be said to Jerusalem, Fear thou not: and to Zion, Let not thine hands be slack.In that day, it will be said to Jerusalem, “Don’t be afraid, Zion. Don’t let your hands be weak.”
- 17너의 하나님 여호와가 너의 가운데 계시니 그는 구원을 베푸실 전능자시라 그가 너로 인하여 기쁨을 이기지 못하여 하시며 너를 잠잠히 사랑하시며 너로 인하여 즐거이 부르며 기뻐하시리라 하리라The LORD thy God in the midst of thee is mighty; he will save, he will rejoice over thee with joy; he will rest in his love, he will joy over thee with singing.The LORD, your God, is among you, a mighty one who will save. He will rejoice over you with joy. He will calm you in his love. He will rejoice over you with singing.
- 18내가 대회로 인하여 근심하는 자를 모으리니 그들은 네게 속한 자라 너의 치욕이 그들에게 무거운 짐이 되었느니라I will gather them that are sorrowful for the solemn assembly, who are of thee, to whom the reproach of it was a burden.I will remove those who grieve about the appointed feasts from you. They are a burden and a reproach to you.
- 19그 때에 내가 너를 괴롭게 하는 자를 다 벌하고 저는 자를 구원하며 쫓겨난 자를 모으며 온 세상에서 수욕 받는 자로 칭잔과 명성을 얻게 하리라Behold, at that time I will undo all that afflict thee: and I will save her that halteth, and gather her that was driven out; and I will get them praise and fame in every land where they have been put to shame.Behold, at that time I will deal with all those who afflict you; and I will save those who are lame and gather those who were driven away. I will give them praise and honor, whose shame has been in all the earth.

Background
Zephaniah was a prophet who ministered during the reign of King Josiah of Judah (around 640-609 BC). At the time, Judah had fallen into spiritual decay after King Manasseh's long years of idolatry, and Zephaniah warned of the judgment that would come on the day of the LORD. Most of the book is filled with pronouncements of judgment, but in its final section, chapter 3 verses 14-20, a dramatic reversal takes place. It sings of the restoration and joy that will come after judgment. This passage is the climax of the whole book, showing that the purpose of judgment is not destruction but restoration. Zephaniah delivers a message of hope to the remnant: God will once again dwell among them and rejoice over them.

Today's reflection
The latter part of Zephaniah 3 is a song of joy that breaks in suddenly within a book filled with messages of judgment. It declares that God will take away Israel's judgment, dwell in their midst, rest in His love, and joy over them with singing. The expression in verse 17 is especially astonishing: God rejoices over His people and sings over them.
Usually it is people who praise God, but here we see God delighting in His people and singing over them. This is a theologically profound scene, showing that God's love is not mere duty but flows out of joy.
To put it simply, just as a parent smiles without even thinking while watching their sleeping child, God is filled with joy as He looks at us. Despite our failures and shortcomings, God does not withdraw His delight in us. Today, hold in your heart the truth that God is looking at you and rejoicing over you. Even when you are not perfect, His joy does not change.
