Genesis 12
- 1여호와께서 아브람에게 이르시되 너는 너의 본토 친척 아비 집을 떠나 내가 네게 지시할 땅으로 가라Now the LORD had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father’s house, unto a land that I will shew thee:Now the LORD said to Abram, “Leave your country, and your relatives, and your father’s house, and go to the land that I will show you.
- 2내가 너로 큰 민족을 이루고 네게 복을 주어 네 이름을 창대케 하리니 너는 복의 근원이 될지라And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing:I will make of you a great nation. I will bless you and make your name great. You will be a blessing.
- 3너를 축복하는 자에게는 내가 복을 내리고 너를 저주하는 자에게는 내가 저주하리니 땅의 모든 족속이 너를 인하여 복을 얻을 것이니라 하신지라And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.I will bless those who bless you, and I will curse him who treats you with contempt. All the families of the earth will be blessed through you.”
- 4이에 아브람이 여호와의 말씀을 좇아 갔고 롯도 그와 함께 갔으며 아브람이 하란을 떠날 때에 그 나이 칠십오 세였더라So Abram departed, as the LORD had spoken unto him; and Lot went with him: and Abram was seventy and five years old when he departed out of Haran.So Abram went, as the LORD had told him. Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran.
- 5아브람이 그 아내 사래와 조카 롯과 하란에서 모은 모든 소유와 얻은 사람들을 이끌고 가나안 땅으로 가려고 떠나서 마침내 가나안 땅에 들어갔더라And Abram took Sarai his wife, and Lot his brother’s son, and all their substance that they had gathered, and the souls that they had gotten in Haran; and they went forth to go into the land of Canaan; and into the land of Canaan they came.Abram took Sarai his wife, Lot his brother’s son, all their possessions that they had gathered, and the people whom they had acquired in Haran, and they went to go into the land of Canaan. They entered into the land of Canaan.
- 6아브람이 그 땅을 통과하여 세겜 땅 모레 상수리나무에 이르니 그 때에 가나안 사람이 그 땅에 거하였더라And Abram passed through the land unto the place of Sichem, unto the plain of Moreh. And the Canaanite was then in the land.Abram passed through the land to the place of Shechem, to the oak of Moreh. At that time, Canaanites were in the land.
- 7여호와께서 아브람에게 나타나 가라사대 내가 이 땅을 네 자손에게 주리라 하신지라 그가 자기에게 나타나신 여호와를 위하여 그 곳에 단을 쌓고And the LORD appeared unto Abram, and said, Unto thy seed will I give this land: and there builded he an altar unto the LORD, who appeared unto him.The LORD appeared to Abram and said, “I will give this land to your offspring.” He built an altar there to the LORD, who had appeared to him.
- 8거기서 벧엘 동편 산으로 옮겨 장막을 치니 서는 벧엘이요 동은 아이라 그가 그곳에서 여호와를 위하여 단을 쌓고 여호와의 이름을 부르더니And he removed from thence unto a mountain on the east of Bethel, and pitched his tent, having Bethel on the west, and Hai on the east: and there he builded an altar unto the LORD, and called upon the name of the LORD.He left from there to go to the mountain on the east of Bethel and pitched his tent, having Bethel on the west, and Ai on the east. There he built an altar to the LORD and called on the LORD’s name.

Background
The author of Genesis is traditionally understood to be Moses, and it was written to tell the people of Israel about their origins and their relationship with God. Genesis chapter 12 is a turning point that moves from the primeval history of chapters 1-11 to the patriarchal history from chapter 12 onward. Ur and Haran, where Abram lived, were major cities of Mesopotamia and belonged to a polytheistic culture that worshiped the moon god. Out of this environment, God called Abram to begin a new journey of faith. This calling is the starting point that leads to the formation of the nation of Israel and ultimately to the history of salvation through Jesus Christ.

Today's reflection
Genesis chapter 12 is the scene where Abram receives God's calling. God tells Abram to leave his country, his relatives, and his father's house. This was not simply a relocation but a request to lay down every safety net he had relied on. In the Mesopotamian culture of that time, to leave one's homeland and family was to give up both social protection and economic foundation.
Along with the command to leave, God gives three promises. That He will make of Abram a great nation, that He will make Abram's name great, and that through him all the families of the earth will be blessed. This promise is the starting point of God's plan of salvation, reaching beyond Abram as an individual toward all humanity.
Abram set out at the age of seventy-five without even knowing his exact destination. Faith is not moving only after understanding everything, but trusting God's word and taking one step forward. In our lives too, there are times when we must lay down what is familiar and move in a new direction. In those moments, we need the courage to hold on to God's promise and take the first step, just as Abram did.
