Romans 10
- 9네가 만일 네 입으로 예수를 주로 시인하며 또 하나님께서 그를 죽은 자 가운데서 살리신 것을 네 마음에 믿으면 구원을 얻으리니That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.that if you will confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
- 10사람이 마음으로 믿어 의에 이르고 입으로 시인하여 구원에 이르느니라For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.For with the heart one believes resulting in righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made resulting in salvation.
- 11성경에 이르되 누구든지 저를 믿는 자는 부끄러움을 당하지 아니하리라 하니For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.For the Scripture says, “Whoever believes in him will not be disappointed.”
- 12유대인이나 헬라인이나 차별이 없음이라 한 주께서 모든 사람의 주가 되사 저를 부르는 모든 사람에게 부요하시도다For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him.For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, and is rich to all who call on him.
- 13누구든지 주의 이름을 부르는 자는 구원을 얻으리라For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.For, “Whoever will call on the name of the Lord will be saved.”
- 14그런즉 저희가 믿지 아니하는 이를 어찌 부르리요 듣지도 못한 이를 어찌 믿으리요 전파하는 자가 없이 어찌 들으리요How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? - 15보내심을 받지 아니하였으면 어찌 전파하리요 기록된 바 아름답도다 좋은 소식을 전하는 자들의 발이여 함과 같으니라And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!And how will they preach unless they are sent? As it is written: “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the Good News of peace, who bring glad tidings of good things!”
- 16그러나 저희가 다 복음을 순종치 아니하였도다 이사야가 가로되 주여 우리의 전하는 바를 누가 믿었나이까 하였으니But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report?But they didn’t all listen to the glad news. For Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed our report?”

Background
Romans is a letter the apostle Paul sent to the church in Rome, a church he had not yet visited. Through this letter, Paul set out to explain the heart of the gospel in a systematic way. Romans 10 sits at the center of chapters 9-11, which deal with Israel's unbelief. Paul emphasizes that the way of salvation is the same for both Jews and Gentiles. At the time, the Roman church included Christians from both Jewish and Gentile backgrounds, and there were disputes over the conditions of salvation. Paul makes clear the heart of the gospel — that we are made righteous by faith, not by works of the law — and explains how that faith begins.

Today's reflection
In this passage, Paul lays out the heart of faith with striking clarity: "If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved." Faith is the conviction of the heart and the confession of the mouth — the two go together.
Paul goes on to explain that "faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ." The Greek word here, rhema, refers not to mere information but to the living word — the message of the gospel. Faith grows in the process of hearing God's word and receiving it.
Simply put, faith does not just drop out of the sky one day. It is a process: hearing God's word, receiving in your heart that the word is true, and expressing that confession with your life. Just as a seed falls on good soil and grows, the seed of the word is planted in the heart and grows up into faith.
Today, try tuning your ear to God's word. Reading Scripture, listening to the sermon in worship, meditating on the words of a song of praise — every one of those moments is soil where faith grows. Even a small beginning is just fine.
