Historical background
He was a prophet who, together with Haggai, encouraged the rebuilding of the temple after the return from exile. The first part (chapters 1-8) foretells the temple's rebuilding and the coming of the Messiah through eight night visions, and the latter part (chapters 9-14) holds prophecies about the Messiah's first and second comings. It is the richest of the Minor Prophets in messianic prophecy.
What to watch for
See how the prophecy of the King coming on a donkey (9:9) was fulfilled at Jesus' entry into Jerusalem.
Meditate on how the prophecy of 'the one they have pierced' (12:10) connects to the event of the cross.
Arrange the meaning of each of the eight visions and grasp God's plan as one big picture.
