Historical background
It is the letter Paul wrote from Corinth during his third missionary journey to the church in Rome, which he had not yet visited. A systematic exposition of the gospel holding the essence of Paul's theology, it became a central text of the Reformation. It proclaims that both Jew and Gentile need the gospel and that the gospel is for all people.
What to watch for
Grasp as one big picture the flow of salvation in chapters 1-8 (sin → justification → sanctification → glorification).
Meditate on the triumphant declaration of chapter 8: 'Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?'
Look concretely at the real-life shape of those who are saved in chapters 12-16.
