Historical background
It is a letter of thanks and joy that Paul wrote from a Roman prison to the church in Philippi. The Philippian church was the first church Paul planted on European soil, and it kept the closest relationship with him. Even in the hard circumstance of prison, the word 'rejoice' appears as many as sixteen times.
What to watch for
Meditate on the humility and exaltation of Jesus in the hymn to Christ (2:5-11).
Consider why Paul could confess, 'For to me to live is Christ' (1:21).
See that the secret of being able 'to do all things' lies not in one's own strength but in Christ.
