Historical background
It is a book foretelling the ruin of Nineveh after it turned back to evil, having once repented at Jonah's preaching. Assyria was an empire that destroyed the northern kingdom of Israel and ruled the surrounding nations cruelly. Just as Nahum prophesied, Nineveh fell in 612 BC.
