Historical background
It is the Gospel written by Matthew—once a tax collector, then a disciple of Jesus—mainly for Jewish readers. It has the most Old Testament quotations and repeatedly stresses that Jesus is the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy. Five discourses, including the Sermon on the Mount, are systematically arranged.
What to watch for
Look concretely at the standard for the life of the people of God's kingdom in the Sermon on the Mount (chapters 5-7).
Trace how Old Testament prophecy is fulfilled through the phrase 'this was to fulfill.'
Understand the nature of the kingdom of God through the parables of the kingdom (chapter 13 and elsewhere).
