Historical background
It was written at a time when, though the temple had been rebuilt after the return from exile, the people's faith had again grown empty and formal. It proceeds as a dialogue of questions and answers between God and the people, addressing the corruption of the priests, the problem of tithes, and intermarriage. After this comes the roughly 400-year 'silent period.'

Examine an indifferent faith through the picture of the people answering God's declaration of love with, 'How have you loved us?'
