Historical background
It is the story of Jonah, a prophet of the northern kingdom of Israel, sent to Nineveh, the capital of Assyria. Jonah's anger at God's compassion for an enemy nation reflects Israel's exclusive nationalism. Jesus cited the event of Jonah as a sign of His own resurrection.
