Historical background
It is the story, set in the era of the Persian Empire, of Esther, a Jewish woman who became queen and saved her people from destruction. It holds the dramatic reversal of Haman's plot to slaughter the Jews. Purim, the feast that commemorates this event, is still kept by the Jewish people today.
