Historical background
It is the letter Paul wrote from a Roman prison to the church in Colossae, whose situation he learned of through Epaphras' report. A false teaching was spreading in the church, claiming that Christ alone was not enough. Paul powerfully proclaims that Christ is the one who is supreme over all things.
What to watch for
Meditate on the cosmic lordship of Jesus in the hymn to Christ (1:15-20).
Consider what forms the temptation 'you need something more than Christ' takes today.
Apply to your actual life the command of chapter 3 to 'put off the old self and put on the new self.'
