Historical background
It is the record of Amos—a shepherd and tender of sycamore-fig trees from Tekoa in the southern kingdom of Judah—sent to prophesy in the northern kingdom of Israel. He exposed the social corruption and religious decline that lay beneath the economic prosperity of the days of Jeroboam II. He was a lay prophet who ministered solely by God's calling, without formal training.
What to watch for
Notice the structure that narrows from judgment on the surrounding nations to judgment on Israel itself.
Meditate on the true worship God desires: 'let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream' (5:24).
Find the biblical basis for social justice in the critique of the rich exploiting the poor.
