Historical background
It is the letter Paul wrote from Ephesus during his third missionary journey to the church in Corinth. Corinth was then a bustling port city, and its morally corrupt culture had influenced the church as well. It addresses concrete problems within the church—division, sexual immorality, abuse of the Lord's Supper, disputes over spiritual gifts, and more.
