Historical background
It was written to remind the people of Israel, returned from exile in Babylon, of their identity and their roots. It covers the same era as the books of Samuel, but especially emphasizes David's positive side and temple worship. Its purpose is the spiritual rebuilding of the community after the return from exile.

Recognize that the genealogies are not a bare list of names but links in the chain of God's saving history.
Meditate on David's prayer of devotion as he prepared for the building of the temple (chapter 29).
Feel the importance of worship in the organizing of the Levites for worship and praise.
